Radon in Ottawa homes
Radon is a radioactive gas from uranium breaking down in soil and rock. It comes into basements through cracks, sumps, floor drains and gaps around pipes. You cannot see it or smell it. Health Canada calls it the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers.
Two surveys give two different pictures. Health Canada's Cross-Canada Survey (final report 2012) found 6.2% of 64 homes tested in the City of Ottawa health unit above 200 Bq/m³. The 2024 Cross-Canada Radon Survey reports 17.0% of tested Ottawa–Gatineau metro houses at or above 200 Bq/m³. They measured different samples: a small government sample inside the City of Ottawa versus a larger volunteer sample across the wider metro area. Your neighbour's result does not predict yours. Only a test does.
If your result is high, the fix is well understood. Active soil depressurization is a common mitigation method; a qualified professional can assess the home and confirm performance with follow-up testing. November is Radon Action Month, and the heating season is the right time to test.
