FAQ

What radon level is too high?

Health Canada's guideline is an annual average of 200 Bq/m³ in a normally occupied area. If a representative long-term result is at or above that level, take corrective action within one year, sooner at higher levels.

Is radon really a problem in Ottawa?

Two differently sampled surveys reported 6.2% of 64 tested City of Ottawa homes above 200 Bq/m³ in 2012 (Health Canada), and 17.0% of tested houses in the wider Ottawa–Gatineau metro area at or above 200 Bq/m³ in 2024 (Cross-Canada Radon Survey). Neither predicts an individual home; only testing does.

How long should a radon test take?

Health Canada recommends a long-term test of 3 to 12 months, with at least 91 days during the heating season. Its 200 Bq/m³ guideline applies to the estimated annual average, not a short reading. Health Canada does not recommend radon testing during a real estate transaction.

How much does radon mitigation cost in Ottawa?

Costs vary with the home, testing method and provider. Ask a qualified professional for a current itemized quote, and compare scope as well as price.

Will the fan be noisy or expensive to run?

Fan placement, sound and electricity use depend on the system design and model. Ask the provider for the proposed location, rated power use and maintenance plan.

Who should install a radon system?

Health Canada recommends a professional certified under the Canadian National Radon Proficiency Program (C-NRPP). Verify a radon professional’s C-NRPP mitigation certification before hiring.
